They are calling it “the DSLR killer.” I don’t know about that, since decent DSLRs are MUCH less expensive than the new Sony Alpha a9 will be (not available quite yet – as of April 21st, 2017). But this is still a pretty big deal.
The Sony Alpha a9 is a mirrorless digital camera with a 24.2MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor! That is a first in the digital camera world. That allows the camera to have an ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800.
There are lots of other amazing tech specs for the new camera, which you can read all about in the B&H article HERE. But since this a site about video, the big question is “can you shoot video with the new Alpha a9? The answer is “Of course you can! Awesome video :)”
What about video?
In order to be truly a DSLR killer, you’d need to shoot awesome video. The Alpha a9 can shoot 4K (3840 x 2160p), using full pixel readout. And of course you can also record video in Super 35mm size.
Price?
As I referred to earlier, this thing isn’t going to be cheap. You’ll pay $4,498.00 for one. While that’s not amazingly high compared to, say, a RED for $40,000+. It’s still more expensive than, say, the Nikon D3300 DSLR, which is only about $500. And even the stellar (I REALLY REALLY want one of these!) Canon EOS 5D Mk III DSLR is only $3,000 bucks, $1,500 cheaper than the new Alpha a9.
But, as Ferris Bueller said, “if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.” With the most up-to-date and advanced technology yet seen, the Alpha a9 will be a fantastic investment for anyone who wants to shoot high quality sports video or stills and create professional quality video without having to mortgage the house.
